The largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel is located just 12 miles offshore from Playa del Carmen. It is considered Mexico's crowned jewel and one of the world's top-five diving destinations. Easily accessible by ferry, Cozumel is known for its beautiful reefs and the brave cliff divers that leap from unbelievable heights. At one time, Cozumel received more visitors than all of Cancun.
In the center of Cozumel is Cedral. Within this small village visitors can find numerous Mayan ruins. Cedral is also the site of an annual celebration featuring bullfights (held May 1-3.). Another great attraction on Cozumel is the Celarin Lighthouse on the southwest tip of the island. The view at the top of the 127 steps is worth the trek.
The Chancanab Lagoon, (now a state park) has a beautiful botanical garden that is home to more than 400 species of tropical plants. There's also the San Gervasio Ruins, which is a major excavation of Mayan ruins and covers approximately ten acres. It's surround by a beautiful, breezy forest.
Beneath the depths of the deep blue sea is where Cozumel's real treasure lies. The Palancar Reef (the area's most popular reef) is more than 20 miles off shore. Once beneath the waves, divers will discover caves and canyons, beautiful sea coral and an enormous variety of colorful fish. Another popular reef is the Santa Rosa - it's noted for it's great depths, sponges and other sea life. Divers are surrounded by schools of fish at the Chankanaab Reef, which is much closer to shore than Palancar. Regardless of which you choose, you're sure to be in awe of the submerged wonders.
Nightlife in Cozumel typically involves a relaxing dinner followed by a wild night. Most of the restaurants stay open to serve drinks, so dinner and nightlife often ends up as the same thing. The outdoor cafes around the zócalo (plaza) are always a popular draw because of the cool night breezes. Those looking for a little more action should stop by Carlos 'n' Charlie's, Planet Hollywood or the All Star Cafe by Melgar. If live music's your thing, Joe's Lobster Pub or the Raga should fit the bill.
