Xel-Ha was once considered to be an important place for the Mayan people. It was a scared city where rituals and dances were preformed to honor the different Gods of Mayan mythology. Today, Xel-Ha is Mexico's largest natural aquarium and one of the most popular snorkeling attractions in Mexico. The name is derived from 'XEL', meaning spring or the place where something is born and 'HA', meaning water- 'place where the water is born'.

This 22-acre collection of caves, coves, inlets, lagoons and cenotes are filled with both salt and freshwater, fed by the Caribbean and the region's network of subterranean rivers. The grounds are simply lovely. All of this can be visited and explored aboard the `Xel-Ha Train,' which is painted to look like an aquarium with a thatched roof. Those who prefer to venture off on foot will have no problems. There is a well-marked system of paths and wooden bridges.

One of the more popular activities at Xel-Ha is the river snorkel journey that takes you through the whole park. You can choose to use an inner tube or free float down the river that winds its way through the lush jungle. The river eventually empties into an inlet, which forms a gigantic lagoon where you'll find yourself immersed in a sea of brightly colored fish. The inlet is completely surrounded by docks and beaches created for your enjoyment.

After your river journey, take a trip over to see Xel-Ha's two cenotes (sink holes). It's just across the bridge at the end of the river. Follow the marked path through the jungle, past caves and limestone outcroppings.

According to legend, Xel-Ha was born when Mayan Gods combined their astuteness, fantasies and love for beauty to create a place that would bring together all of the best things nature had to offer. The Gods were so delighted with their creation they decided to share it with mortals. Could all those Gods be wrong?

Xel-Ha located on the eastern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately 75 miles south of Cancun via highway 307. You can rent a car, ride a bus or take a taxi. If you arrive by public transportation a free transport into the park from the highway is provided.
